1. How to select a good battery ?
Some people do not pay much attention to their car's battery. But its importance and cannot be ignored as bad battery can really give you a tough time. It is the component that provides your engine necessary power to start.A powerful battery is an asset. It not only improves the performance of the car but alos increases the life of the car. While a weak battery will prove as venom and will eventually make the car lifeless.
The following information will help you to find a suitable battery for your car:-
1.GROUP SIZE - Group size tells abut the volume of the battery and the location of the battery's positive and negative terminals. Group size varies from model to model and the car manuals are the best source to find the group size you want for your battery.
2. COLD CRANKING AMPS (CCA) - It is a measurement of the number of amps a battery can deliver at 0 degree Fahrenheit for 30 seconds and not drop below 7.2 volts.
3. RESERVE CAPACITY (RC) - This is a number of minutes a fully charge battery at 80 degree Fahrenheit will discharge 25 Amps until the battery drops below 10.5 volts. It refers to the battery " standing power". This is the amount of minutes the battery can continously supply minmium voltage needed to run a car in case the cars alternator or fan belt fail to work. With an excellent reserve capacity (RC) rating , your car can run on the battery alone even if the alternator stops working.
4. MAINTENANCE FREE - Maintenance free is a better option because it avoids the need to check the battery constantly. The batteries that are successful in doubling the amount electroyte reserve above the plates completely elminates any need to top up during the entire life of the battery.
5. WEATHER CONDITIONS - Selection of battery also depends on the climate and the driving conditions of the area you are living in. A long life battery is suitable if the weather conditions are hot. Search for the one with tough housing because it protects the plates and do not let the battery to corrode easily and also prevent the evaporation of the fluid.
6. CHECK FOR FRESHNESS - Make sure you purchase the freshest battery available. The battery that has been sitting on shelf for an extended period can lose some of its charge and may not provide the performance during its first use. Long term performance wont be compromised however as the battery can be returned to its original levels of performance with either in- vehicle charging or by using an external charger.
